Main meaning and objectives of the NIS2 Directive
1. Strengthening cybersecurity
The NIS2 Directive raises the level of protection for key sectors of the economy such as energy, transport, health, banking, digital infrastructure and public administration. It requires critical service operators and digital service providers to adhere to rigorous cyber security standards.
2. Increasing the range of regulation
The NIS Directive2 expands the scope of entities covered by the legislation to include new sectors and organisations that were not previously regulated by NIS1. Thus, more entities are obliged to take measures to protect themselves against cyber threats.
3. Duty to report incidents
The NIS2 Directive introduces more precise cyber incident reporting requirements. Organisations must report major cyber incidents to the relevant supervisory authorities within a strict timeframe, allowing for a faster response and reducing the impact of attacks.
4. Harmonisation of regulations in the EU
The NIS2 Directive aims to harmonise the approach to cyber security across all EU Member States. It seeks to eliminate differences in the level of protection between countries and create a more coherent and coordinated response to cyber threats.
5. Responsibility and sanctions
The directive introduces tougher sanctions for non-compliance. Organisations that do not comply with NIS2 may face financial penalties and other forms of liability, increasing the pressure to comply with security standards.
6. Increasing resilience to threats
With NIS2, organisations are required to implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to increase their resilience to cyber attacks, contributing to an overall increase in security in the EU.
